- I may have missed a few items – it all depend on each climber what more they want to bring.

Itinerary:

Assumed we will be the 1st group of climbers (total 200 climbers divided into 2 groups of 100 each, 1st group climb on 5 Jul and 2nd group climb on 6 Jul).

4 Jul:   All climbers to assemble at KK airport latest by 11 am. Buses will start ferrying climbers in stages to a nearby shopping mall to buy essential stuff (food, etc if needed) and lunch (at your own cost).

Around 1 to 2 pm, buses will begin journey to Mt Kinabalu foothill (along the way will stop at a local bazaar for a short look&see. Pineapples there is sweet but pricy (slaughter tourist)

Check into hotel at Mt Kinabalu foothill (mixture of chalets and motel rooms) & rest of day is free (walk about – nice and cooling)

Meet for dinner (FOC) – start from 6pm onwards and then rest early. Pack your bags – what to take up the mountain and what to leave behind that evening.

5 Jul:   Early breakfast – around 7 am (FOC), then get ready for climb.

Leave extra luggage (lock pls) at hotel. Carry a backpack (water, snacks, raincoat or rain jacket & pant, spare t-shirt, glove, etc) with 2 hiking poles yourself and pass a bag (warm clothes, jackets, clothes for next day use, towel, snacks, toiletry bag, etc) to porter to carry up to Laban Rata for you (charges last year was RM10/kg). Last year I carried a 7 kg backpack myself and passed to porter an 8 kg bag to carry.

You are now ready for the climb!!

Van will start ferrying climbers from 8.30 am by batches from car park to Timpohan entrance. Climbers to register at entrance before allowed into Timpohan gate.

Start climbing. Distance is 6 km (3000 m high).

Time taken from Timpohan to Laban Rata (base camp) will depend on your fitness level and what you want to achieve. It ranges from 2 hours to 12 hours (last year group experience).

1 hiking pole will be good enough for the hike up. Keep the other in backpack.

There will be rest area with proper toilet & drinking water refill (mountain water) along the journey – believe it is every 1km.

Our group porters will be assigned to supervise a specific numbers of our climbers until the last person reach base camp.

Note: Should you injured yourself and need to be carried down the mountain, there is human porter service and their charges is by weight by distance (can’t remember the rate – quite pricy).

As and when you arrive at base camp, you can rest and order hot cooked meal (noodle soup or fried noodle) at the cafeteria (at your own expense). There is also a mini-mini convenience stall where you can buy snacks, etc

Organiser will assign room with bunk bed (room sharing – unisex) of between 6 to 12 beds to climbers at Laban Rata cafeteria.

Rest of day is free. Walk about, take photos.

Dinner is served early (FOC).

Shower – Common shower room (separate male and female of course). Haha!! No hot water – will be ice cold shower for the brave who need a shower. Drinking cleaning is ok too.

Early bed time

6 Jul:   Get up & be ready by about 2 am. Hot supper will be served (FOC).

Around 3am, start climbing from Laban Rata to Low’s Peak (4095 meters) – 2 km (1,000 meter high) rock surface hike. Should take between 2 to 4 hrs.

Get to Low’s Peak to see sunrise, take some “Victory” photos and then start to climb back down to Laban Rata. Should take between 1 to 3 hours.

Rest and breakfast (FOC) will be served around 8 am. Rest, pack your backpack and pass the other bag to the same porter (no extra charge as fee is return trip).

Begin the hike down to Timpohan.

Coming down is not so tiring but add pressure to knee and ankle, so 2 hiking poles is recommended to be use when coming down.

Time taken to comedown should be faster than going up.

Once arrive at the Timpohan gate, van will drive you back to hotel car park.

Most people will rest and hang around the Ranger’s office area. Be careful not to leave your bag or hiking pole unattended. Eg, everyone tend to leave his or her hiking pole at the low wooden wall of the Ranger’s hut. I did the same and some one switch (stole) my new carbon-hiking pole & left behind an old warn out pair of cheap pole that I eventually inherited. So, be careful with your personal belonging,

Rest and have lunch at a nearby roadside café – good curry mee (at your own expense)

When ready, collect all your belonging, and van will drive you to Zen Resort Hotel (hillside resort) – about 9 km away.

Zen hotel is based on twin sharing room. Rest.

Paid massage specially arranged for  our Climbers is available – limited masseur though, so have to book early and que. Must do - reward and pamper yourself. Trust me, you need one.

Group dinner at Zen hotel (FOC) – normally steam boat.

Mt Kinabalu climb certificate with climber name (so make sure you submit your name to us correctly) will either be presented at dinner (if collected on time from the Park Ranger) or at breakfast, the next day.

7 Jul: Breakfast at Zen hotel (FOC).

Check-out (around 10am) and bus depart from Zen Resort to Sutera Harbour Resort.

Sutera Harbour Hotel stay is based on twin sharing room.

Rest and free time – swin, relax by the pool or walk around the marina.

Dinner will be at your own expense. Recommend you have seafood dinner at a food court with many seafood restaurants not too far from the hotel. Need to go by cab.

8 Jul:   Breakfast at hotel (FOC).

Check out and that it folks, the end of the Mt K climb programme.

For those wishing to extend your stay, you are on your own. Just remember, for most or some - your legs muscle will be so sore, you can hardly walk up or down steps.
